Pokemon MUGEN Edition Review

Why didn't anyone think of this before?

It's no secret that Pokemon is one of the most popular and successful video game-based media franchises ever. It now spans video games, trading card games, animated television shows and movies, comic books and toys. The franchise is most recognized for their series of RPG video games and is enjoying a new 3D era on the Nintendo 3DS handheld console. Millions of players buy the latest Pokemon games and try to 'Catch 'Em All!' every time. But the series has also experimented with new ways to bring its characters to life. Pokemon Mystery Dungeon series is one of those.
So it's only fair that people would try to bring the franchise into the MUGEN world, and most of them failed. It's only logical though, since the franchise doesn't really fit in the 2D fighting world. Or at least this is what we thought. The brilliant minds of Ryon and Alexei, the developers behind Pokemon MUGEN Edition, have just proven us wrong. Their game is not only excellent, but also discovers a completely new way to use the MUGEN engine. They have somehow managed to create a 2D fighting game with RPG elements, something never done before with it.
Once you get into the game, you'll immediately notice its beautifully animated and simplistic design of the main menu, a theme that follows throughout the entire game and some great sounds that will feel familiar to anyone who has played a Pokemon game before. It feels like an official game made by Nintendo.
But it's in the gameplay where this game is truly amazing and differentiates itself from other MUGEN games. It plays just like an RPG. Once you have picked a Pokemon, you are given a list of four moves that your Pokemon knows. You can command your Pokemon to perform one move at a time, since doing so will consume the energy bar, which takes time to re-fill. Different moves deal different damage to your opponent's Pokemon, but also drain the energy bar differently. Using the strongest moves only will allow your opponent to attack more quickly and deal more damage, so you'll have to carefully pick your next move or you'll be sorry. Type advantages are present here too. An electric-type move will deal extra damage to a water-type Pokemon and so on, but that is not all. Some Pokemon are slightly stronger than others, despite of their types, which will make you think before making your choice. This creates a great in-game depth never seen in any MUGEN game before. You can play the game alone, but it's much better when you play it with a friend, because it creates a competitive feel that will keep you on your toes.
There are some downsides to it though. For once the game is still in BETA and features only 14 Pokemon and 6 stages and since all the Pokemon are just there for you to select, the "Gotta Catch 'Em All!" feel that the original games have is gone. Oh well... I'm just asking for too much.
